Arlington - For the second week in a row, Sam Houston took a softball doubleheader from the Southland Conference's first place team as the Bearkats defeated UT-Arlington 2-0 and 2-1.
Sam Houston right-hander Tomi Garrison tossed another Southland series opener shut out as the Bearkats handed league leading UT-Arlington a 2-0 loss Saturday afternoon.
Garrison spread seven hits over seven innings, striking out five of the 26 batters she faced. Garrison also produced two of the Bearkats' three hits with a single and a double.
Shortstop Hailey Wiginton scored Sam Houston's first run in the third inning with a solo home run over the right field fence. Left fielder Alex Survant scored the second run in the fourth inning, walking, reaching second base on a sacrifice bunt then scoring on a UTA error by the second baseman.
UTA loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning, but Garrison stopped a hard hit ball up the middle and made the play at second base to maintain the shutout.
In the second game, Sam Houston State jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first following a Kim Damian RBI-single up the middle.
The Mavericks tied the game 1-1 with third inning with a solo home run. Erin Burford scored the winning run with a solo homer to lead off the seventh inning.
Cecilia Castillo recorded the win. Garrison pitched the final inning and picked up her third save of the season.
Sam Houston upped its record to 19-26 for the season and evened its mark at 11-11 in Southland action. UTA dropped to 29-19 overall and now stand 16-7 in league play.
