Top point guard Darius Gatson signs

Gatson earned second team all-conference honors as a sophomore and honorable mention recognition as a freshman at Trinity Valley. He led the Cardinals to won-loss records of 23-9 in 2009-10 and 25-6 in 2010-11.
During his sophomore season, Gatson averaged 11.9 points, 6.4 assists and 2.3 steals. He shot 51 percent from the field (108-of-214), 48 percent from three point range (15-of-31) and 75 percent from the free throw line (114-of-153).
His head coach at Trinity Valley was Pat Smith. Gatson played at Klein Forest High School for head coach Carey Black and assistant coach Lance Alexander, a former Bearkat guard who led Sam Houston in three-point shooting in 1990.
Gatson led Klein Forest to a 33-4 record and the state finals in Austin as a junior and a 23-11 mark his senior year.
Gatson also earned Academic All-Conference honors and brings a 3.7 overall grade point average to Sam Houston.

"Bearkat fans who remember some of the excellent point guards we have had here at Sam Houston will see Darius as a combo of Ashton Mitchell and JeJuan Plair. He is the type of guy you want leading your team, a student-athlete his teammates will look to for leadership."
