Garrison no-hits McNeese

Lake Charles, La . -  Tomi Garrison threw a no-hitter in the first game of a Southland Conference softball doubleheader and McNeese State's Wendy Bond came back to toss a one-hitter in the nightcap as the Bearkats and Cowgirls split Saturday afternoon.

Sam Houston won the opening contest of the three-game series 3-0. McNeese took a 5-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader. The two squads will complete the series Sunday afternoon.

Garrison's no-hitter is the 20th in Bearkat softball history. The junior right-hander was part of the 19th no-hitter a year ago as Garrison and Morgan Mikulin combined to no-hit Texas Southern in five innings.

Sam Houston opened the first inning with an unearned run as Alex Survant singled and scored on an error after a Taylor Gray hit.   Sarah Allison and Erin Burford produced the Bearkats' second and third runs in the sixth inning with an RBI double and run-scoring single, respectively.

Garrison faced 27 batters in her seven innings of work, walking four and striking out three.

Allison picked up the Bearkats' lone hit of the second game in the third inning.

The split gives Sam Houston a 15-23 season mark and puts the Bearkats in sixth place in the Southland Conference stands with a 7-9 league mark.

McNeese State stands 21-21 for the year and 11-9 in conference play.
