Conway, Ark. - Outfielder Luke Plucheck blasted a three-run homer to centerfield in the top of the ninth inning to power Sam Houston to a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon.
The win evened the Southland Conference baseball series between the Bears and UCA at one victory apiece. The deciding game in the series will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Sam Houston(34-18, 17-12) out hit Central Arkansas (22-27 11-18) eight to six as third baseman Kevin Miller led the Bearkats at the plate going 2-for-3.
Miller ended a 13-inning scoreless streak for Sam Houston with the Kats trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning. Miller single, moved to second after a hit batsman and to third on a sacrifice bunt before coming home on an RBI ground out by first baseman Daniel Nottebart.
Designated hitter Chris Andreas hit a solo home run to right center in the eighth to tie the contest.
Miller and outfielder Mark Hudson both walked before Plucheck hit his game-winning home run in the ninth.
Matt Shelton allowed the Bears only four hits in six innings. The senior struck out seven Bear batters. Michael Oros (2-4) earned the victory in relief, giving up only two hits in three innings and striking out three batters.
Following the UCA series the Bearkats will wrap up the regular season against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday, May 19, through Saturday, May 21.
The series marks the final home appearance for Sam Houston head coach Mark Johnson who is retiring at the end of the 2011 season. Game times for the series are 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Johnson, who last year became only the 44th head coach in NCAA Division I baseball history to post more than 1,000 victories, will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony before the "Farewell Game" Friday, May 20.
