Two Kats earn Southland academic honor

Benavidez, a sophomore outfielder from Midlothian, is a general business major who has compiled an overall grade point average of 3.41 during her two seasons at Sam Houston.
The fourth-leading hitter for the Bearkats with a .319 average this season, Benavidez was a second team All-Southland Conference performer this spring. She produced nine multiple hit games including two 4-for-4 performances.
Garrison, a junior right-handed pitcher from Garland, is a psychology major who has produced an overall grade point average of 3.43 in three years as a Bearkat.
The ace for the Bearkat pitching staff this season, Garrison threw in 37 of Sam Houston's 54 games including more than half of the team's innings played. An honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection, she ended the season with 15 victories, a 2.62 earned run average, three saves, five shutouts and 123 total strike outs. Garrison no-hit McNeese State and posted a two-hitter against regular season champion A&M-Corpus Christi.
Both Benavidez and Garrison were second team selections on the 2011 Academic All-Southland honor squad.
The Academic All-Southland Conference teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
