Wins over SMU and Houston last weekend propelled the Eagles into the top 10 of the South Region in the NSCAA Rankings.
North Texas stands 4-0-1 on the season so far, which marks only the second time in school history that the Mean Green have been unbeaten through five games. North Texas is the only women's soccer team in the state of Texas that is still undefeated this season.
Sam Houston enters the contest with a 2-4 record. Sophomore midfield Emily Edenstrom was named Southland Conference women's soccer "Offensive Player of the Week" Tuesday after scoring a pair of goals and assisting on a third as the Bearkats split last weekend, defeating Grambling State 4-1 in Louisiana and falling to Rice 4-1 in Houston.
Tricia Mallory, Jessica Toms and Edenstrom are the Bearkats' top scorers this season. Mallory has scored three goals while Toms and Edenstrom each have tallied twice.
Sam Houston defeated North Texas 1-0 in overtime in a rain storm last year in Huntsville. Kirby Zak scored the winning goal just 40 seconds before extra time was to have expired.
Friday's match marks the fourth time Sam Houston and North Texas have met in women's soccer. North Texas won the first two meetings in 2004 and 2005.
Sam Houston will return to Joseph Pritchett Field for its first home match in three weeks when the Bearkats play host to Texas Southern at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
There is no admission charge for women's soccer matches at Pritchett Field.
