Soccer Blanks Northwestern St.

Huntsville - Katie Ferrera scored goals at the 16:29 and 67:02 marks to propel Sam Houston to a 2-0 women's soccer victory over Northwestern State Friday night at Pritchett Field.

The victory kept the Bearkats in second place in the Southland Conference race with a 3-1-1 record. Sam Houston now stands 6-7-1 for the year. Northwestern State dropped to 5-8-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in league action.

SHSU goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton picked up her fifth shutout of the year, making five saves on the Demons' 16 shots.

"We've been playing well offensively but the shots weren't going in last weekend," Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown said. "But tonight we found the goal and had several other outstanding scoring opportunities. We're playing better and picking up a win at home is always important."

Ferrera's first goal came off a cornerkick by Shelby McDaniel from the left side. Ferrara blasted a right-footed shot in from just outside the penalty area.

Tricia Mallory set up the second goal with a pass to McDaniel on the left side.

Sam Houston totaled 16 shots while limiting Northwestern State to 10. The game was spirited with three yellow cards and a red handed out by the referee.

The Bearkats will take on first place Stephen F. Austin next weekend in Nacogdoches.
