The Sam Houston State women's bowling team placed seventh at the Hawk Classic hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday after best-of-seven baker bracket play.
Host UMES won the event. Central Missouri, Vanderbilt, Fairleigh Dickinson and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the top five finishers. Adelphi, Sam Houston State, Sacred Heart, Kutztown and Valparaiso finished six through 10 respectively. New Jersey City, Saint Francis (NY), Norfolk State, Monmouth, Howard, Delaware State, Hampton and Morgan State rounded out the field.
Saturday the team went 4-1 in team total pins matches in the second day of action in the Hawk Classic hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore.
The tournament was held in Millsboro, Delaware, at the Millsboro Lanes. Eight top 10 squads and four teams ranked 11 through 20 are part of the 16-team field in the event.
Saturday the Bearkats defeated No. 12 Kutztown 1092-891, No. 9 Valparaiso 984-957, No. 20 Delaware State 1016-905 and Howard 980-861. The Kats' loss came at the hands of No. 1 Maryland Eastern Shore 1021-905.
Combined with Friday's team baker matches, the Bearkats stand 7-3 in the event.
"Saturday was a lot better overall. Our veterns really stepped up," SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. "We were able to manage the lanes a lot smoother. We attacked the lanes slightly different which paid off overall. As a whole we did a lot of the right things today and stay out of trouble for the most part. That's basically the key to any successful tournament day."
No. 4 Vanderbilt defeated Sam Houston 804-768 in Friday's first match. The SHSU bowlers bounced back for three consecutive victories, defeating Morgan State 866-667, No. 11 Norfolk State 692-617 and Hampton 721-630. The day ended with an 892-705 loss to No. 6 Central Missouri.
"Friday the lanes were transitioning very funny and a lot of the teams including ourselves were all over the place which made making the right moves demanding," SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said.
