Huntsville - Kendall Cleveland, Deveney Wells-Gibson and Kaylee Hawkins all totaled double figure kills as Sam Houston State extended its volleyball winning streak to 13 matches with a 25-21 25-13 25-16 victory over Nicholls State Saturday morning.
The win keeps Sam Houston in first place in the Southland Conference with a 13-2 league record. The Bearkats stand 18-9 for the year.
Sam Houston overcame an early scare, coming from 8-3 down in the first set. At 16-all, Hawkins slammed one of her 12 kills and the Kats never trailed again.
Cleveland ended with a match-leading total of 13 kills. Wells-Gibson added 11.
Kathyrn Stock led Nicholls State with seven kills. The Colonels now stand 10-18 for the year and 5-12 in conference play.
The Bearkats served well, producing eight aces and winning 42 points on their serves. Kim Black and Wells-Gibson each produced three aces apiece.
Tayler Gray assisted on 37 of the Bearkats' 51 kills and led the defense with 20 digs. Wells-Gibson totaled 15.
Sam Houston has three matches remaining with only one of the road. The Kats travel to place Southland third place team Northwestern State Tuesday night.
