The Kat volleyball squad owns a 13-match winning streak and holds a narrow half-match lead over Central Arkansas in the conference standings. The Bearkats are 13-2 while UCA stands 13-3.
Northwestern State is in third place with an 11-4 mark. The Demons are the second hottest team in the league behind SHSU. Northwestern State is riding a seven-match win streak and is playing in their final home match of the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Prather Coliseum.
The Demons (19-8 overall) are seeking to post only the second 20-win season in school history with their next triumph, already having posted the first winning season since 1987 and the most Southland victories in 25 seasons of league competition.
NSU took down fourth-place Stephen F. Austin for the first time in program history last Friday, sweeping the Ladyjacks 3-0. The victory extended the Lady Demons' winning streak to the longest by the program since 1992.
SHSU enters Tuesday night's match at 18-9 for the season. In their 13-match winning streak, eight of the wins have been in three sets. Sam Houston defeated Northwestern State in the pair's first meeting in Huntsville Oct. 6 in four sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Deveney Wells-Gibson leads the Bearkats with 392 kills, 29 aces and 322 digs.
Tayler Gray and Kim Black control SHSU's defense. Gray has collected 359 digs and served 27 aces while Black has denied 130 attacks. Additionally, Gray has put up 1,055 assists.
Sam Houston will wrap up its home schedule with matches Thursday at 7 p.m. against McNeese State and Saturday at 3 p.m. versus Lamar at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Southland Conference post-season tournament will decide the league's NCAA playoff representative Friday Nov. 16 through Sunday Nov. 18 in Conway, Arkansas.
