Sam Houston fell 63-31 to No. 10 Delaware in the first round of the preseason WNIT.
The Bearkats jumped out to an early 5-0 lead against the No. 10 team in the nation, the Delaware Blue Hens. The lead didn't last long as Delaware took a 26-16 lead into half and never looked back.
The Kats were led by Britni Martin who had 16 points. Martin added two boards an assist and a steal.
Sequeena Thomas had 12 rebounds for the Kats but wasn't able to get going offensively. Thomas had just two points and was 1-10 from the floor.
Angela Beadle chipped in nine points for SHSU and had five rebounds. Point guard Jasmine Johnson had two assists, two points and four rebounds.
"We did not execute the little things. Our team got worked out on the boards. We've got to come back home and work to get better and prepare for the next round. We beat ourselves tonight"
The Blue Hens proved to be a formidible foe even without their All-America star Elena Delle Donne who has been sidelined by a recurrence of lime disease.
Delaware opened the second half on an 11-2 run to extend the lead over the Bearkats. After the slow offensive start for the Blue Hens, they heated up and never cooled off.
The Hens had three players score in double figures. Trumae Lucas had 14 points and six rebounds. Jaquetta May chipped in 13 points and had 11 boards. Lauren Carra added 12 points and three rebounds.
