Houston - First baseman Kim Damian went 5-for-6 at the plate to lead Sam Houston State as the Bearkats fell twice Saturday in action at the University of Houston softball tournament.
Damian went 2-for-2 in a 9-1 run-rule loss to North Texas in the morning game. Damian posted the Bearkats' only run with a solo homer in the third inning.
A five-run fourth inning powered North Texas to the victory in five innings.
The Bearkats used four pitchers with Shelby Lancaster starting and drawing the loss. Freshmen Meme Quinn and Haley Baros pitched in the third and fourth innings, respectively, and senior Courtney Schoenemann finished the game.
Sam Houston's Tori Benavidez hit a double in the third inning and Alyssa Coggins had a single in the fourth inning for the Bearkats other two hits.
Damian was 3-for-4 in the second contest, an 8-3 loss to the University of Houston. Damian hit a double and two singles.
Benavidez had an RBI single and catcher Hillary Adams and second baseman Alyssa Coggins both produced RBIs on ground-outs for Sam Houston in a three run fifth inning.
UH jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Kats cut the margin to 7-3.
Tomi Garrison totaled four strike outs against the Cougars as the senior right-hander went the distance to take the loss in the circle against UH.
Sam Houston completes play in the tournament Sunday with a rematch against the Cougars.
