The Bearkats got another
great pitching performance and this time had the offense to back it up. Justin
Jackson and Brandon Bergen combined on a one-hitter and the Kats put nine runs
on the board in a 9-1 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
The Kats (4-2) busted
out the bats early, putting five runs on the board in the opening frame. Ryan O'Hearn
got the scoring going with a single to score Colt Atwood and Luke Plucheck.
After an error by the Warhawks allowed John Hale to score, Shea Pierce doubled
home Kevin Miller and O'Hearn. The Kats chased ULM starting pitcher Alex
Hermeling after facing just six hitters in the first without recording an out.
It was all the
scoring starting pitcher Jackson (2-0) needed. He allowed a single in the
fourth and the only run of the game came on a home run by the Warhawks (5-2) to
lead off the fifth. Freshman hurler Bergen come on and pitched three innings
of shutout ball without allowing a hit to pick up the save.
After the homer in
the fifth by the Warhawks, the Kats responded in the top half of the sixth
inning. Corey Toups doubled and Plucheck followed with the first home run of
the season by the Kats to put them up 7-1.
SHSU added two more
in the top of the ninth on a single by O'Hearn, who eventually scored on a groundout
by Greg Olson. Then Tate Baker, who entered as a pinch runner, scored on a wild
pitch.
The Bearkats
totaled 13 hits for the game, with Hale and O'Hearn each picking up three.
The Kats and
Warhawks will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
