Starr win highlights indoor meet

"This was a great outing for us," Sam Houston head coach David Self. "I'm very excited overall. We had some girls that really responded and did some great things for us."
Senior captain Jenny Zoch took first place in the shot put with a throw of 46' 6", the third best throw in the conference so far. She also tossed 52' 2" in the weight throw which took fourth and puts her in the top eight in the conference.
"Jenny's struggled with some back injuries, which is really difficult when you're a spin thrower," said Self. "It's nice to see her healthy and out there able to score some points for us."
In the 60 meter hurdles, Sam Houston placed five women in the top seven finishers.
Junior Sabrina Starr won the event with a time of 8.51 seconds. The time was a personal best and ties the conference best.
Starr also set a new meet and facility record at Wichita State and now holds the third fastest time ever by a Bearkat in the event.
"If Sabrina has a good race and does what she needs to she can be the next conference champion in the hurdles," said Self. "She's certainly capable of doing that."
Also placing in the hurdles were Pashe Moore (8.93) taking third, Britny Biles (9.02) finishing fifth, Allyson Pettit (9.07) placing sixth and Morgan Davis (9.09) finishing seventh.
Junior Alyssa Dooley continued her record breaking 2012 by beating her own school record by over four seconds in the mile run (4:59.37) for a third place finish. Dooley is the first ever SHSU female athlete to run the mile in under five minutes.
Dooley also took fifth in the 800 meter run (2:19.96).
However, Dooley's dominance over the distance record book is being challenged by freshman distance runner Solenn Riou. Riou took over the top spot in the 3,000 meter run, beating the record Dooley set just last week in Houston by more than five seconds with a time of 10:05.75 for a fifth place finish.
"It looked like Alyssa's plan was to just swoop in and take all the records from the 3,000 down to the 800, and she broke five minutes in the mile this last meet," said Self. "But then Solenn steps up and puts up that great time in the 3,000. I think they are great training partners and can feed off each other a little bit."
Sunday Foster finished third in 200 meter dash with a time of 25.08 seconds, the second fastested time for the conference so far this year.
"I think you put Sunday in a race with anyone in the conference she'll make a push to win it," said Self.
Ayanna Magee (25.31) also finished fifth in the event.
Winnie Ileso (17' 11.5") earned third place in the long jump and Venessa Onwuchekwa (5' 4.25") finished third in the high jump.
Folashade George took second place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.67 seconds.
George, Tonica Wimberly, Magee and Foster also teamed up to take third place in the 4x400 meter relay (3:50.63). They rank as the second fastest 4x400 in the conference.
The next meet for Kats will be the Sooner Indoor Invitational on February 18th in Norman Oklahoma. The competition will be the final tune up for the team before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on February 24th.
