Doubleheader Sweep

Home runs by Hillary Adams, Kim Damian, Ashley Isbell, Tori Benavidez powered Sam Houston to a doubleheader sweep of Texas Southern Tuesday night at Bearkat Softball Complex.

The Bearkats shutout the Tigers 5-0 in the opener and came from a three-run deficit to take the nightcap 8-3.

The victories put Sam Houston above the .500 mark for the first time this season as the Kats now stand 17-16. The SHSU softball team has won 16 of its last 19 contests. Texas Southern dropped to 17-12 for the season.

With the two wins Sam Houston head coach pulls within two more coaching wins of chalking up his 1,000 career victory. Brock has compiled a lifetime record of 998-602-1 in his 27 seasons as coach at Sam Houston, Texas A&M and Baylor.

A two-run double in the first inning by third baseman Shelbi Tucker and a two-run homer to left center by Damian in the second frame got the Bearkats off to a quick 4-0 start in the opening game. The home run was Damian's seventh of the season.

Adams put a solo shot over the left field fence to make the score 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The homer was Adams' third in her last two outings and her sixth of the season.

Freshman Meme Quinn (4-2) started, allowing one hit and striking out five batters in five innings. Haley Baros pitched the final two innings.

A two-run homer by designated hitter Brianna Parker and a triple by right fielder Jessica Miller in the top of the third inning of the nightcap put Texas Southern up 3-0. Sam Houston picked up its first run in the bottom of the third as Damian doubled, then scored on a double by shortstop Sarah Allison.

An RBI single by Damian and a two-run triple by  Benavidez in the bottom of fourth put the Kats back in charge 4-3. Catcher Ashley Isbell added a two-run homer in the fifth.

Shelby Lancaster (7-5) was the winning pitcher in relief in the second game.
