Thursday, April 26, the team broke into several groups to refurbish facilities on both the Sam Houston campus and in the city.
Student-athletes placed new trees and helped rake up trash and refuse at the Eastham-Thomason Park near downtown Huntsville. The trees were to replace those lost in the park due to last year's drought.
Student-athletes aslo helped repaint the railing on the porch at the Ron Mafrige field house at Bowers Stadium and several rooms inside campus buildings.
The project is one of many community service undertakings for Sam Houston State student athletes.
"The motto of Sam Houston State University is one of General Sam's favorite sayings - 'the measure of a life is its service.' The football team and all student-athletes at Sam Houston enjoy giving back to the community," Bearkat head football coach Willie Fritz said.
Student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports teams engage in various community service functions during the year. Projects include a mentor program with Huntsville Independent School District, canned food drive benefiting the The Good Shepherd Mission, Rita B. Huff Animal Shelter fundraiser and the pop tab drive for M. D. Anderson Cancer Center / Ronald McDonald House.
