Bearkats aim for medals in San Marcos

The team enters the meet with eleven top ten rankings.
"What we're really trying to focus on with this year is just really, really maximizing the individual performances, because that's how you do it in track," said Coach Dave Self. "We need everyone to perform their best at the conference meet."
Junior Alyssa Dooley looks to be one of the top performers for the Bearkats. She is ranked third in the conference in the 1500 meters and sixth in the 800 meters.
"I'm really excited," said Dooley. "A lot of people in the last few weeks have been hitting PR's and doing really well so I'm looking forward to it."
Dooley already holds the school record in the 1500 meters at 4:30.61 and she has run about a second off Cathy Nelson's school record of 2:10.13 in the 800 meters.
"She gets in a good one at conference and I think we could see her not just break it but smash our school record," said Coach Dave Self.
Pole vaulter Shelbie Zotyka is also ranked in the top three for this Kats. Zotyka has finished in the top three in every meet she has competed in this season and her season best vault was 12-6.75 only last week in the Bearkat Twilight Meet.
The Kats look to be particularly strong in the heptathlon with Morgan Davis holding the fourth best mark so far in the conference and Allyson Pettit the fifth best.
Davis won the conference championship in the indoor pentathlon and was named the 2012 Southland Women's Indoor Track "Student-Athlete of the Year."
Pettit is looking to use her experience from last year to improve her result.
"Freshman year for the multi is definitely a learning curve," said Pettit. "I'm ready. I think we're going to go big this year, Morgan and I."
Pettit is also ranked in the top ten in the 100 meter hurdles, along with Sabrina Starr who is ranked fifth. Starr took a runner-up finish from in the indoor championships in the 60 meter hurdles.
Jenny Zoch looks to score points for Sam Houston in multiple throwing events. Her strongest event is the shot put, where she ranks fifth in the conference with a throw of 47-8.5.
She is also in the top ten in the hammer and sits twelfth in the discus.
"My goal for conference is to simply get out there and compete," said Zoch. "It doesn't matter how far the other competitors have thrown in previous meets; it is about what you can do at conference. I am looking forward to posting several season best throws and earning some major points for the team."
While this year's team is relatively young, Zoch advises a calm approach.
"I tell them to stay relaxed and just do your thing," said Zoch. "We have practiced all year for conference and we have to trust that all our hard work will show in competition."
