Arkansas State edges Bearkats Saturday

Lawrence, Kan. - Three Bearkats totaled double figure kills as Sam Houston fell to Arkansas State in four sets in the SHSU volleyball team's final match at the University of Kansas Jayhawk Classic Saturday morning.

Arkansas State defeated the Kats 25-22 17-25 28-26 25-20 to up their season record to 4-3. Sam Houston drops to 3-4 for the year.

Deveney Wells-Gibson led SHSU with 18 kills in 43 attempts. Kaylee Hawkins totaled 15 kills in 44 attempts while Kendall Cleveland post 14 kills in 41 tries.

Jasmine Terry led Arkansas State with 15 kills. Sam Houston out-pointed their opponents 76-66 and totaled 14 blocks to only eight by ASU.

Kim Black led the Kats with seven blocks. The performance moved the senior into fourth place in Sam Houston career blocks. Black has totaled 174 blocks, standing behind only Karen Zoch (179), Gwen Gilder (189) and Bonnie Beard (214).

Tayler Gray totaled 44 assists and 14 digs. Hawkins was credited with 19 digs and Wells-Gibson with 14.

Sam Houston ended the tournament with one victory in three matches, defeating Nebraska-Omaha in four sets Friday evening.

Wells-Gibson ended as one of the top point scorers in the event, totaled 48 kills for an average of 4.36 kills per set. Cleveland and Hawkins followed closely with kill totals of 41 and 30, respectively.

Wells-Gibson was named to the all-tournament team for the second week in a row. She joined Caroline Jarmoc, Erin McNorton and Sara McClinton of Kansas, Tyler Henderson and Jessica Adams of Tulsa on Allison Kearney of Arkansas State on the team.

Sam Houston continues its road swing next week, playing Tuesday night at Rice University and then traveling to New Orleans for their third and final regular season tournament action of the fall.
