The Sam Houston men's basketball game continues its three-week, seven game road swing this weekend at the Bearkats travel south for the Corpus Christi Basketball Classic.
The Bearkats will play University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the Classic. Liberty and Hampton face off at 1 p.m. in the other half of the bracket.
On Saturday, the Friday's losers play at 12 noon in the third place game while the winners face off in the championship final at 3:30 p.m.
Sam Houston started the season with four victories including road wins at Texas-Pan American and Prairie View A&M. The Bearkats lost on the road to talented teams from Texas A&M and SMU this week.
Three Kats own double figure scoring averages. Junior college transfers Kaheem Ransom and Jabari Peters are producing 14.3 and 13.5 points per game, respectively. Sophomore point guard Paul Baxter has posted a 10.7 average in SHSU's first six games.
Junior post player Michael Holyfield has become a force for the Bearkats under the basket. He leads the squad with 6.5 rebounds per game and has blocked 16 shots this year.
Returning lettermen Terrance Motley (7.5 points per game), James Thomas (6.3) and Nathaniel Mason (6.3) also are seeing plenty of playing time.
After the tournament in Corpus Christi, the Sam Houston men head to the SFA Invitational in Nacogdoches Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, to face James Madison and Towson.
Sam Houston will not return to Johnson Coliseum until Saturday, Dec. 28, when the Bearkats play host to LIU-Brooklyn.
