The Sam Houston softball team heads to College Station Wednesday to meet one of only four teams in NCAA Division I play this season that still remain undefeated.
Texas A&M is 17-0, the best season start in Aggie softball history, and stands No. 9 in the national rankings. Aggie pitcher Mel Dumezich is the reigning Southeastern Conference "Pitcher of the Week." First pitch is at 5 p.m.
Texas A&M defeated Sam Houston 8-0 on Feb. 13 in the Bearkats' only home game so far this season.
"They have an outstanding ball club and we're looking forward to having the opportunity to play them again," Sam Houston head coach Bob Brock said. "We're three weeks away from starting conference play and need to be working to get better every game."
The Bearkats stand 7-9 for the year but their victories include wins over Baylor, Texas Tech, Southern Mississippi and Illinois State.
With two starters out due to injury, several players have stepped up. Cecilia Castillo is batting .333 with two home runs and Hillary Adams has totaled four home runs and 16 RBIs.
Shelby Lancaster is off to a fast start in the pitching circle with five complete games and two shutouts this year. She owns a 5-3 record and has struck out 20 batters.
Following the Texas A&M game Wednesday, the Bearkats head to the Alamo City for a three-game weekend series with the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Sam Houston returns home to the Bearkat softball complex on Wednesday, Mar. 6, for a 4:30 p.m. single game with Texas State.
