Bearkats Fall to Baylor 4-1

Sam Houston split the pair of midweek games with the Baylor Bears after falling 4-1 Wednesday in Huntsville. The Bearkats struggled to string hits together past the first inning Wednesday.

Second baseman Ryan Farney led off the first with a double and came around to score on a ground ball double play hit by catcher Anthony Azar. This proved to be the only multi-hit inning of the game for SHSU.

Baylor grabbed the lead from the Kats in the sixth inning. Tyler Eppler started the frame with a strikeout but gave up a double and a single before right fielder Nathan Orf doubled to the left field alley to drive in two runs.

The Bears would plate a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to make the score 4-1.

Tyler Eppler matched his season high for innings pitched with 5 2/3. The righty struck out seven batters and allowed just two runs on five hits. Eppler was credited with the loss.

Baylor reliever Josh Michalec pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball to get the win. Ryan Smith registered the final out and was credited with a save.

Farney was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Freshman third baseman Dalton Perry was 2-for-4 in his first start of the season.

The Bearkats will open Southland play this weekend as they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three game series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
