
Sam Houston seeing spring success

The Sam Houston volleyball team is following up their 2012 Southland Conference championship with quality performances in spring competition.
The Bearkats rolled up a 3-1 record against top teams in last weekend's FAST Complex Collegiate Invitational in Houston.
The Kat volleyball squad defeated North Texas 20-25 25-22 15-8, lost in three to Texas A&M 17-25 25-20 12-15 then ended the day with a pair of straight set wins over Southeastern Louisiana 25-15 25-22 and Louisiana-Lafayette 25-16 25-23.
“We are really excited about our performances this spring against quality competition,” SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said.
Last year's Southland Conference “Player of the Year” Deveney Wells-Gibson led Sam Houston in the tournament with 46 kills and a .297 hitting percentage. Other Bearkat attacking statistics included Carling Urben (25 kills, .302%), Haley Neisler (17 kills), Sarah Guzman (12 kills), and Lauren Bohlen (11 kills)
Tayler Gray ran the floor for the Kats assisting on most of the kills.
Wells-Gibson also led the defense with 33 digs. Other dig totaled were 24 by Gray, 20 by Guzman, 11 by Caitlyn Cleveland and 10 by Neisler.
As a team, the Bearkats served 23 aces with only 11 errors. Wells-Gibson accounted for 10 of the aces while Tayler Gray totaled 4 and Guzman 3.
Sam Houston has two remaining spring tournaments: April 6 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and April 13 at Rice. The 6th Annual SHSU Volleyball Golf Scramble Fundraiser will be at Raven Nest Golf Course on Thursday, May 2.
