DeMarcus Gatlin Named Academic All-Southland

DeMarcus Gatlin, junior guard for Sam Houston State, has been voted to the 10-member 2013 men's basketball Academic All-Southland Conference honor squad.
The Houston Bush High School product holds a 3.11 overall grade point average as a kinesiology major. The junior started the first 22 games of the season before being sidelined by a knee injury. Gatlin averaged 22.8 minuts, 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds. He was the leading scorer for the Kats in six game and posted double figure points in 10 contests.
A Dean's List student and SHSU student-athlete advisory committee team representative, Gatlin becomes the 11th Bearkat men's basketball player to earn Academic All-Southland Conference honors in the past decade. Those 11 players have received Academic All-Southland honors a total of 22 times in that time span.
Overall, during Sam Houston's 26 seasons as a Southland member , 21 Bearkat men's basketball players have been named academic all-league a total of 39 times.
Northwestern State junior guard Gary Stewart has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday in conjunction with the release of the men's basketball all-academic teams.
The 10 academic all-conference honorees were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches, sports information contacts and academic advisors. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Other members of the team are Gary Stewart of Northwestern State; Desmond Haymon Jacob Parker and Thomas Walkup of Stephen F. Austin, Onochie Ochie from Southeastern Louisiana, Kevin Hardy of McNeese State, Jordan Harks from Central Arkansas and Linden Smith-Hyde of Nicholls State.
