Sam Houston State junior Neishka Cardona has added more hardware to her already impressive international bowling resume.
Cardona competed this past week in Buenos Aires in the 2013 Ibero-America, a competition among 14 countries that all originally had roots with Spain and Portugal. The event featured some of the best bowlers in Latin America.
“This was my first time at that tournament and is was a really good experience,” Cardona said. “Lanes were tough and competition was even tougher, but it was all about making good shots and definitely repeating them.”
Cardona won a pair of medals, taking silver in the women's trio event and bronze in doubles while representing her home country of Puerto Rico.
In the women's trio, Cardona and her teammates Cristina Rodriguez and Kristie Lopez combined for a 3,530, beating third-place Argentina by 34 pins. Cardona averaged 194 with a high score of 223.
Cardona teamed with Lopez in the doubles and took home the bronze medal.
Lopez and Cardona combined for a six game score of 2,486 edging fourth-place Argentina by just four pins to earn a spot on the medal stand. Cardona bowled an average of 203, with a high score of 255.
In the individual competition, Cardona finished 8th in the field of 18 with an average of 177 and a 198 high game. In total pin fall for the entire competition, she also finished 8th with and 18 game average of 192.
“I knew we had a good team and that we were going to do great things,” she said. “Coming back home with a bronze medal in doubles and a silver medal in trios means a lot and it only shows the beginning of what's to come this year for the National Team when we go to Columbia at the CONCECABOL tournament.”
In the same competition, former Bearkat bowler Aida Sanchez took bronze in the Under-23 individual event.
