Sam Houston Aiming High At Southland Outdoor

Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Central
The Sam Houston men's and women's squads head to Lake Charles, La., this weekend eager to test themselves against the rest of the league in the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Action will start Friday morning with competition in both the men's and women's multi-events. McNeese State is the host of the outdoor meet.
Sam Houston, conference champions in men's outdoor track in 2005 and 2006 and in women's track in 2005, 2006 and 2008, looks to improve on its performance at last year's outdoor event in San Marcos.
The men were fourth place finishers and the women placed ninth in the 2012 outdoor championships. Both the Sam Houston men and women were runners-up to Stephen F. Austin at the conference indoor meet in Norman, Okla., in February.
“Stephen F. Austin definitely is the favorite. They have a strong team on both the men's and women's side,” SHSU head coach David Self said. “We do have the ability to score points in events that SFA is not as strong. We're going to give it our best shot.”
Matt Johnson, Charles White and Matthew Viverette look to lead the men's team. Johnson is the favorite in the decathlon and ranks among the league's leaders in the javelin.
Viverette has posted the Southland's top time this year in the 110 meter hurdles and the second best time in the 400 meter hurdles.
White is a threat in both the long jump and the triple jump after winning both events at the indoor championships in February.
Trevor Sealy and Brek Christensen look to add to the Bearkats' point totals in the throwing events.
On the women's side, the Bearkat squad that finished as the runner-up at the indoors champion will be missing two veterans in Alyssa Dooley (red-shirting outdoors due to an injury) and two-time indoor pentathlon champion Morgan Davis (who has completed her outdoor eligibility).
“We have some very talented young women who we look to have step up as freshmen and sophomores,” Self said.
Lygia Foreman owns the Southlands second best 400 meter dash time. Ruth Amaku stands number one in the leagu in the 400 meter hurdles and Danielle Demas and Winnie Ileso are ranked in the 100 meter hurdles.
Prelims in the running events will be held Saturday night and the running finals will be held Sunday afternoon.
