Bright spots in first scrimmage

The pieces are beginning to fit together for the 2013 Sam Houston football team according to Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz.
“Overall, we're pleased with the effort and the progress we're making,” Fritz said following the squad's first scrimmage of preseason camp. Including special teams play, the team went through 90 snaps with the new faces on the field getting much of the work.
“It's always good to get to work with officials on the field,” Fritz said. “It helps you clean up the little things that will get you flags in a game. We were excited to have the opportunity to get the young guys some live snaps.”
Sam Houston has won back-to-back Southland Conference championships and reached the NCAA Division I Football Championships finals each of the past two years. But one of the important missions in camp is to find replacements for four departed offensive line starters and in a secondary where only one starter returns.
“This was a controlled scrimmage. We weren't tackling to the ground,” Fritz said. “We're thin at a few spots so we're gradually going to break into it and be careful with the full live reps.”
The Bearkats open the 2013 schedule Saturday Aug. 31 when they play host to Houston Baptist in a 6 p.m. contest, the first of seven home games at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
“I really think our first group is solid,” Fritz said. “They're going to get better and better each and every week.”
