Bearkats Open Southland Play Friday

The Sam Houston soccer team will open Southland Conference play against league newcomers Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word this weekend on the road. The Bearkats (2-4-1) play ACU Friday at 4 p.m. and UIW Sunday at 1 p.m.
It will be the first women's soccer matchup for Sam Houston against the two teams.
Abilene Christian is undefeated this season with six wins and a tie. The Wildcats picked up a 1-1 draw against Texas-El Paso on the road in the team's third match of the season.
Incarnate Word is 5-1 with their only blemish coming last week against Rollins College (Fla.) on the road.
Both teams are in their first year of Southland membership and are ineligible for the league championship and post season tournament.
Midfielder Mariah Titus leads the Bearkats in scoring with three goals this season. Forward Shannon Shields has two assists to her credit.
Goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton has made 50 saves this season and allowed 10 total goals against tough nonconference competition.
The Bearkats' road swing will continue through early October when they return home to play Stephen F. Austin Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
