ABILENE -- An 80th minute goal from midfielder Mariah Titus wasn't enough as the Bearkats dropped their Southland opener 2-1 to Abilene Christian.
After a scoreless first half, ACU opened the scoring with a pair of quick consecutive goals. Midfielder Jacey Ferrara got on the scoresheet five minutes after the break from a corner kick. The senior then assisted on the eventual game-winning goal just two minutes later.
"The field was water logged today and it mad it difficult for us to pass the ball," said Bearkat head coach Tom Brown. "Abilene Christian played very hard and determined in order to get a win today. We will regroup tomorrow and get ready for Sunday's game."
Titus scored her team-leading fourth goal from an angled shot near the top of the box. The Kats unfortunately couldn't find another in the final 10 minutes.
The Wildcats outshot SHSU 19-15 and goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton was forced to make four saves.
Next up for the Bearkats is a trip to Incarnate Word Sunday at 1 p.m.
