The Sam Houston men's and women's track and field squads opened the indoor portion of their 2014 campaign in style at the Houston Indoor Opener with a total of 16 top five finishes.
Those performances included the 4x400 meter relay team of Matthew Viverette, Jarrick Wright, Alex Gilreath and Rodney Jones that took first with the time of 3:22.89.
Not to be outdone, on the women's side, Kats runner Sabrina Starr placed first in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.50.
In the men's 400 meter dash, Sam Houston swept the top two spots with Rodney Jones taking the gold with a time of 49.29 and Alex Gilreath grabbing the silver just behind at 50.27.
Elsewhere, the Kats saw success in the men's triple jump as Chris Theriot took third at 14.36m and Alejandro Trevino 14.31m followed behind in fourth.
Sam Houston would also take three of the top five spots in both the men's weight throw and women's 400 meter dash. In the weight throw, Brek Christensen led the Kats with a distance of 18.83mm in second followed by Trevor Sealy in third (17.27m) and Ammaad McCarthy in fifth (16.98m).
In the 400 meter dash, Lygia Foreman placed second (56.22m), Ruth Amaku took fourth (58.00m) and Jordan Grady came in fifth (58.60m).
The women would also be a major player in the long jump and triple jump with Lauren Nwegbo taking home third (5.75m) in the long jump followed two spots behind by Kaylynne Wright in fifth (5.50m) in addition to Khalaya Williams rounding out the top five in the triple jump with a distance of 11.34m.
In the women's pole vault, Katelyn Wynn would take fourth with a distance of 3.55m.
The Bearkats next action will take place on Friday, Jan. 17 at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational in College Station.
