Tipton spent two years at the University of California, Davis.
He served as a four year team captain for Sam Houston from 2006 to 2009 where he competed in javelin and discus. Tipton was a NCAA Midwest Regional Qualifier in javelin in 2007 and the discus in 2008 as well as the 2009 Southland Conference Champion for discus.
In his post-collegiate career, Tipton was a USATF Outdoor Championships Provisional Qualifier consecutive seasons (2010 & 2011) before qualifying for the USA Olympic Trials in 2012.
Tipton received his Bachelors of Science from Sam Houston State in May 2009 and followed it up by receiving a Masters of Arts in Kinesiology from his alma mater in 2011. While earning his masters, he served as a graduate assistant for the Bearkats and undertook the duties of coaching all men's and women's throwers amongst other responsibilities.
As an assistant coach with UC Davis, the Aggies were back-to-back Big West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Conference Champions and with Tipton's assistance, the lineup boasted a trio of Big West Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors and as many Big West Conference championship medalists.
Tipton will coach all men's and women's throwing events with the Kats as well as developing weight training and aiding in daily operations such as NCAA Compliance, team travel and fundraising.
