Bolstered by two first place finishes, the Sam Houston State men's and women's track and field squads put together a pair of second place team titles at the Texas A&M 12 Team Invitational on Friday tallying 103 points and 130 points respectively.
On the women's side, junior Lygia Foreman – who is the school's current record holder in the 400 meter dash – placed first in the race with a time of 56.38 seconds.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Sabrina Starr would take her second first place finish in as many weeks with a time of 8.51 and was followed up closely in second by teammate Danielle Demas's time of 8.78.
“In the opener at Houston she had to come from behind whereas today she really led from the get go,” head coach David Self said. “Her competition toward the end was only Danielle Demas. We feel like she's really going to put down some good times.”
In total, the men would rack up nine top three finishes including a landmark day for Rodney Jones, whose time of 47.18 in the 400 meter dash places him second all-time in Sam Houston history in the race. In the process, Jones shed over two seconds off his time from last week's 49.29 at the Houston Indoor Opener.
One notable surprise just outside the top three occurred in the shot put by way of freshman Kevin Singletary who put forth a distance of 46 ft. 11.75 inches after not expecting to see action in the meet and possibly the season.
“The original plan was for him to redshirt,” Self said. “We talked with him and Coach Tipton and we felt he had a chance to score and do some things. He said 'hey, if I can help the team, let do this.' We decided really last minute to knock off the redshirt and he came around.”
Elsewhere, the 800 meter run offered up a series of firsts. In her first collegiate competition, freshman and Huntsville native Briana McCall produced a second place finish with a time of 2:16.17 while on the men's side, De'Quad Binder, who was competing in his first meet of the year would take second with a mark of 1:53.53.
Other second place finishers on the day included Katelyn Wynn (pole vault; 11 ft. 10.75 in.), Lauren Nwegbo (60 meter dash; 7.66 seconds), Brek Christensen (weight throw; 52 ft. 2.75 in.), Kristen Mitchell (60 meter dash; 6.86 seconds) and Matthew Viverette (60 meter hurdles; 8.29 seconds).
The Sam Houston women's relay squad of Jordan Grady, Ruth Amaku, Alexandria Kimble and Paula Smith would also take home the silver with a time of 3:52.83.
The Kats next competition will take place from Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.
