Fresh off five wins over top 20 teams on the way to a runner-up finish two weeks ago at Arkansas State, Sam Houston's No. 10 rated Bearkat bowlers head to Arlington for another important tournament.
Seven top 20 squads will join the Bearkats in the 12-team field Friday through Sunday at the Prairie View A&M Panther Invitational.
The event is being held at the International Training and Research Center lanes, one of the top bowling facilities in the nation.
Headlining the field are No. 1 Arkansas State, No. 2 Maryland-Eastern Shore, No. 3 Central Missouri, No. 5 Stephen F. Austin, No. 6 Nebraska and No. 8 Vanderbilt. Also entered are No. 14 Valparaiso and unranked Jackson State, Norfolk State, Texas Southern and host Prairie View.
“Having the opportunity to take on all these top teams at an outstanding facility like the ITR Center is a great experience for our team,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “We need to take advantage of having these teams down in Texas and pick up some big wins.”
Sam Houston brings a 51-26 overall dual match mark into the event. The Bearkats are 27-27 against teams ranked among the current top 20.
Current pin fall averages for the Bearkats in traditional team action this year are Anna Groce 200.4, Becca Pittser 193.3, Kimi Davidson 192.8, Nieshka Cardona 191.8, Erin Brown 183.5 and Kanine Kuwahara 177.7.
Sam Houston has participated in six tournaments so far this season, winning the Hornet Invitational in Montgomery, finishing as runners-up at Tulane and Arkansas State, fifth at Nebraska and seventh at both Valparaiso and New Jersey.
Action begins Friday with quad baker competition followed Saturday by tradition team matches and Sunday with best-of-seven baker bracket play.
The event will be streamed live through www.bowl.com .
