Sam Houston took only an hour and 20 minutes to pick up its second Southland Conference volleyball victory Saturday afternoon in Lake Charles, La.
The Bearkats defeated McNeese State 25-21 25-20 25-23 to up their season record to 9-7. The Kats stand 2-1 in league action.
Deveney Wells-Gibson accounted for 18 of Sam Houston's 38 kills. She hammered attacks for scores on set point in the first stanza and on three of the Kats' final five points in the third and final set.
Huntsville freshman Jordyn Vaughn delivered the match-winning point at 24-23 in the third set. Vaughn ended the afternoon with nine kills. Carling Urben added eight kills for the Bearkats.
Setter Michelle Griffith produced both double figure assists (34) and digs (10). Breanna Homer accounted for nine digs. Libero Claire Kilpatrick posted seven digs.
Sam Houston overcame six lead changes in the first set and led throughout the second set after overcoming an early Cowgirl lead.
The Kats never trailed in the final set after jumping out to a 4-0 lead. McNeese fought off two match points to cut the margin to one, 24-23, before Vaughn closed the door on the victory.
Sam Houston returns to its home floor at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Thursday, October 9, in a 6:30 p.m. match against Incarnate Word. The contest is the first at home for the Bearkats since August 30. The SHSU women also play host to Abilene Christian on homecoming day Saturday, October 11, at 11:30 a.m.
