Baton Rouge – LSU overcame an early lead to hand Sam Houston a 71-45 defeat in the season opener for the Bearkat women's basketball team.
Transfer guard Shernise Robertson led both teams with 21 points. She hit five of her 10 three point attempts. Taylor Dorsey added eight points for the Bearkats while Shadijah Moore led the team with nine rebounds.
Jenna Deemer scored 16 points to lead LSU.
Sam Houston led by three, 18-15, early in the first half and trailed only 32-25 at intermission. But the Tigers out-scored the Kats 39-20 in the second period.
"In the first half we came out and were a little surprised that we did so well," SHSU head coach Brenda Nichols said. "But I we have to do a better job on the boards. That really hurt us and LSU did a really good job. That is a big difference."
LSU out-boarded the Bearkats 47-24. Sam Houston hit 17-of-45 from the field for 37.8 percent while the Tigers were 28-of-66 for 42 percent.
Sam Houston will play host to Wiley College Friday at 11 a.m. in the annual “Pack the House” game at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
