Wells-Gibson, Griffith named All-Southland

Sam Houston State outside hitter Deveney Wells-Gibson and setter Michelle Griffith have been named as first team selections on the 2014 All-Southland Conference volleyball squad.
The 18-player honor squad is select by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
A senior from San Antonio / Churchill, Wells-Gibson stands as only the second Sam Houston volleyball player to earn first team all-league honors three years in a row in the Bearkats' 28 seasons in the Southland. Carli Kolbe was the first, earning her selections in 2009-11.
Wells-Gibson led the Southland Conference with 520 total kills this fall, an average of 4.81 per set.
She produced double figure kills in 27 of Sam Houston's 29 matches and ended the regular season with a string of 16 consecutive double figure performances.
She currently ranks No. 10 in all-time Sam Houston kills with 1,466 in her career.
Griffith, a sophomore from The Woodlands / College Park, led the Southland in assists with 1,208, an average of 10.98 per set.
Next action for the Bearkats will be the Southland Conference post-season tournament which begins Friday in Natchitoches, La., with four quarterfinal matches.Sam Houston, the No. 4 seed, opens play Friday at 6:30 p.m. against host team Northwestern State.
The quarterfinal and semifinal matches of the tournament will be streamed live on the Southland Conference Digital Network, available at Southland.org and on the league's Apple and Android mobile and tablet apps. The championship match will be carried exclusively on ESPN3 on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2:05 p.m., with David Saltzman and Brooke Bentley on the call.
