Host Fairleigh Dickinson had to dig deep to defeat Sam Houston in two best-of-seven baker matches to win their own tournament championship as the New Jersey Jamboree came to an end Sunday in North Brunswick, New Jersy.
The Bearkats ended as the runner-up in their second tournament of the season, winning 10 of the 13 matches.
Sam Houston posted seven victories over top 20 ranked opponents.
"Overall it was a great weekend but we left a lot out there today,” SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. “We battled ourselves as much as our opponents today.”
Ten of the 18 games Sam Houston played Sunday, the Bearkats total 200 or more pins.
“Most days, that's great but we made too many little mistakes at the wrong times,” Hagen said. “It's a great learning experience for the team and we'll get back to work Monday. At the end of the day I am very proud of the team for how we competed overall and this team is the definition if resilient especially for being so young."
All three losses in the Jamboree came at the hands of FDU, one in traditional team play Saturday and two in bracket action Sunday. The Bearkats lost their opening match to FDU in seven games, falling 202-182 in the final stanza with games tied at three apieace.
After a 4-1 victory over No. 4 Vanderbilt, the Bearkats and FDU were tied at two games apiece before the tournament hosts put together game wins of 192-179 and 234-201 to hoist trophy.
During the tournament Heather Penatzer finished second in the individual results with a 219.55 average. Anna Groce was 18th with a 199.0 mark and Stephaniee Zavala 21s at 195.55

The No. 3 ranked Sam Houston women's bowling team continued its winning ways Friday, going unbeaten on the first day of the Fairleigh Dickinson New Jersey Jamboree in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
Highlight of the day's action was the Bearkats' fourth, fifth and sixth victories this season over top 20 ranked opponents. The SHSU women knocked off No. 5 Maryland Eastern Shore 1,019-974 in their last match of the day.
In Friday's quad baker action, the Kats started Friday with a 1,073-951 win over No. 19 Delaware State.
Sam Houston also defeated Caldwell 896-654, No. 20 Monmouth 1,006-875 and New Jersey City 1,113-533
