Kats fall 64-53 to Wofford

The Bearkats went cold from three-point range as they made just one trey on 22 attempts and dropped the finale of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament 64-53 to Wofford. Sam Houston State shot just 31 percent from the field in the ballgame.

Aurimas Majauskas scored a career high 20 points and was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. The sophomore's previous career high was 19 points against Hillsdale Baptist last season.

Sam Houston went 2-1 at the event, hosted by Fairfield University, with wins over South Dakota and Fairfield.

The Bearkats' DeMarcus Gatlin was selected to the all-tournament team, joining Karl Cochrane and Lee Skinner of Wofford, Tyler Larson of South Dakota and Amadou Sidibe of Fairfield.

Senior Michael Holyfield was the only other Bearkat to score in double figures with 10 points in the game. Paul Baxter and Dakarai Henderson each added seven points. Henderson was the only SHSU player to hit a three-pointer.

Wofford had four players score in double figures, led by guard Eric Garcia with 14 points. Spencer Collins was the team's second leading scorer with 13 points. Karl Cochran added 12 points on a pair of three-pointers and five total field goals. Lee Skinner finished with 10 points and was the team's leading rebounder with seven boards.

The Terriers shot the ball well and hit 51 percent of their field goals, including 4-of-10 three-pointers. \

Holyfield made the first two Bearkat baskets of the game and gave his team a 4-2 lead after just a few minutes. The lead was short-lived and Wofford would remain ahead for the rest of the game. The Terriers led by as many as 15 points.

Sam Houston will return to Johnson Coliseum after Thanksgiving to host University of the Southwest, Saturday, November 29.
