Sam Houston State sophomore defender Megan Bennett has been named the Southland Conference defensive player of the week after the Kats posted a pair of shutouts against Houston Baptist and Nicholls.
Bennett has helped her team post three consecutive shutouts and five in the last six games. Friday she played every minute of the Kats scoreless overtime draw against HBU.
The Klein Oak High School product was able to score the game-clinching goal against Nicholls Sunday after she finished off a corner from senior midfielder Madison Bible at the far post. Bennett was reinserted into the starting lineup halfway through the season and has been a big part of the Bearkats recent defensive success.
After struggling through non-conference play, Sam Houston finished third in the league in goals allowed and goals against average.
Bennett has been a big part of the Bearkats' most successful regular season in school history, posting eight league wins for the first time and earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
The Southland Tournament gets started next week and the Bearkats will play the winner of the matchup between No.3 Houston Baptist and No. 6 Southeastern Louisiana, Friday at 4:30 p.m.
