Four Kats named to All-Southland teams

Allie Johnson, Ashley Alonzo and Shelby McDaniel were named to the All-Southland first-team, while Mariah Titus earned second-team honors, after the foursome led Sam Houston State to a second-place finish in the league.
Johnson, a sophomore forward, finished the regular season tied for the Southland lead in goals (eight) with the Player of the Year Zuri Prince. She became the fifth sophomore in school history to score at least eight goals. Johnson was also second on the team with three assists.
A junior forward, Alonzo sparked the Kats great run through Southland play with a hat trick against Incarnate Word in the second league game. She finished the regular season second on the team with six goals, while also assisting on two goals.
McDaniel plays as the main creative force in the midfield for Sam Houston. She scored five goals and dished out two assists. McDaniel has started all but one game this season.
An attacking midfielder, Titus led the Bearkats with four assists this season. She led the team with eight goals a year ago but has been more of a facilitator this season.
The Bearkats also placed three players on the Honorable Mention list, with all three being vital to Sam Houston's recent defensive renaissance. Defenders Caitlyn Schwartz and Megan Bennett and goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton have combined to post five shutouts in the last six games.
It's been a historic season for Sam Houston. The Kats posted a school record eight league wins and scored another SHSU record 23 goals in conference play. They also earned a bye in the Southland Tournament for the first time ever. The Kats will be looking to make just their second tournament final ever as they play the winner of the No. 3 Houston Baptist and No. 6 Southeastern Louisiana matchup in the semifinals Friday at 4:30 p.m.
