The first day of action at the Crusader Bowling Classic in Valparaiso, Indiana, Friday was a mixed bag with the Bearkats defeating three ranked opponents but losing to two unranked squads and a fourth ranked team.
Sam Houston opened quad baker action with a 1,002-903 victory over No. 4 Vanderbilt but dropped a 1,113-955 loss to No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Kats' second contest.
The No. 3 ranked Bearkats bounced back for wins over No. 16 McKendree 920-852 and No. 20 Monmouth 1,045-926. But the SHSU women dropped their final two encounters of the day, falling 946-901 to Tulane and 992-810 to Alma. Whitewater, Nebraska and Vanderbilt all went 5-1 Friday while Alma was the only unbeaten squad at 6-0.
Sam Houston enters Saturday's tradition team action in seventh place in total pins with 5,633.
The Bearkats now stand 24-7 for the season with a record that includes 13 victories over nationally-ranked opponents.
The tournament is hosted by Valparaiso University at Inman's Recreation Center in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The Bearkats are one of 10 nationally-ranked squads in the 14-team field. Other top 20 teams competing include No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 Arkansas State, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Central Missouri, No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater, No. 16 McKendree, No. 18 Alabama State, No. 20 Monmouth and host No. 15 Valparaiso.
The Valparaiso Crusader Classic is Sam Houston's third event of the year but it will be the first change the Bearkats have to face rivals Nebraska, Central Missouri and Arkansas State. The SHSU women defeated Nebraska in the NCAA finals last April to earn the women's bowling national championship.
