Gatlin nominated for Allstate Good Works Team

Sam Houston State senior men's basketball player Demarcus Gatlin has been nominated for the Allstate Good Works Team, the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced Wednesday.
This prestigious community service award recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.
Gatlin has been a member of the Sam Houston Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for four years and currently serves as a member of the executive council. In that role he represents Sam Houston's SAAC at Southland and SHSU athletic staff meetings.
The Houston native spends time speaking to local school children and participates in the teen leadership program at the junior high school.
He, along with many Bearkat student-athletes, collects pop tabs to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House for cancer research in Houston.
Gatlin participates in the “Backpack Buddies” program where student-athletes deliver food from the Houston Food Bank to local elementary students who are less fortunate. He also assists in unloading the trucks from the Houston Food Bank when items are delivered to Huntsville.
He serves as a liaison with the faculty and staff athletic council on campus and serves as an ambassador for the “Saturday's at Sam” campus visits.
The senior is leading the Bearkats in scoring with 10.2 points per game coming off the bench. He also leads the team with 5.2 rebounds per contest. Gatlin missed all of the 2013-14 season after injury his knee late in the 2012-13 season.
From the 158 NABC nominees and 93 WBCA nominees, distinguished voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Members of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team will be invited by Allstate, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, to the 2015 NABC Convention and 2015 NCAA Men's Final Four in Indianapolis, where they will participate in a community project benefitting the host city.
