Kats get first win 61-54 over Texas Southern

Shadija Moore registered the first double-double of the season to lead Sam Houston State to a 61-54 victory over Texas Southern. Moore scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as the Bearkats notched the first win of the season.

The point and rebound totals for the junior transfer were both her highs for the season.

The Bearkats had four scorers in double figures led by sophomore guard Morghen Day with a team-high 15 points while also pulling down seven rebounds.

Sophomore guard Taylor Dorsey scored 11 points and added nine boards. Junior point guard Amanda Barnes rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points while also assisting on eight baskets.

Sam Houston managed to keep Texas Southern from getting closer than six points in the final seconds of the second half as they cruised to victory.

The Bearkats jumped out to a 29-16 lead at halftime, holding Texas Southern to just 20 percent shooting from the field. Sam Houston shot 36.7 percent in the first period and were led by nine points from Moore.

The first half was tightly contested until Morghen Day buried the Bearkats' first three-pointer of the game, giving SHSU a 16-11 lead. The Kats would grow the lead to as many as 15 points in the first half.

Texas Southern was led by Toni Cheadle with 15 points while Brianna Sidney added 14 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
