SHSU Women Take Aim at Championship

Through 15 events at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala., the Sam Houston women's track and field team has earned the opportunity to pick up at least one point in every event of day two competition on Thursday.
“We're sitting really well even with a couple tough things happening late,” head coach David Self said. “To be only down three points, that's pretty good because we have still a lot of heavy hitting events tomorrow.”
The Kats will be well-represented Thursday with Sabrina Starr, Danielle Demas, Lauren Nwegbo, Lygia Foreman, Elizabeth Ene, Nicole Aponte and Briana McCall all capturing berths to compete in the finals.
Starr and Demas finished one-two in the 60m qualifiers with times of 8.45 and 8.58 respectively. Other top three finishers included Nicole Jenrette (first place/5-6/high jump and second place/36-4.75/shot put), Lygia Foreman (third place/55.19/400m dash) and Allyson Pettit's second place finish and 5-5 mark in the high jump (pentathlon).
“[Allyson's] really been grinding year after year, getting better and better,” Self said. “To come in and score real well in the pentathlon and jumped real well in the high jump and scored well in the long jump; that's big. She's definitely done her part.”
In the weight throw, junior Adrienne Quillin and sophomore Ashley Jenkins both captured career-bests with tosses of 57-5 in a fifth place finish and 57-2.25 in a sixth place finish respectively.
After five indoor meets and one full-day of conference action, the Bearkat women will have their opportunity on Thursday to capture the school's first Southland title since they last did it in 2008.
“Regardless of the outcome, we really want to this group of athletes get tough and never say die,” Self said. “Even if we don't end up on top, go down swinging.”
