The Sam Houston State women's track & field program has captured its first Southland Conference Championship since 2008, using a huge second day push to vault its way past in-state rival Stephen F. Austin by a score of 132-124.
The schools battled to the bitter end until the 4x400m relay squad of Jordan Grady, Sunday Foster, Ruth Amaku and Lygia Foreman broke the meet record with a time of 3.43.30 to pass up SFA on the last leg of the race and give the Kats a 15 point lead heading into the day's final event.
The big individual news of the day came on the women's side from senior Sabrina Starr who broke her own school record in a first place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.19. In the feat, Starr moved up to tenth in the country in her category.
As was the case in the preliminaries, teammate Danielle Demas claimed a second place finish behind Starr, this go-around adding her own personal record of 8.42.
The Kats had a big day in the pole vault, as well with junior Katelyn Wynn capturing first with a mark of 12-8.75 and junior teammate Kara Whitson tying for second place at 12-4.75.
Junior Lygia Foreman added her own first place finish in the women's 400m dash with a career-best of 54.37 in the 400m run. She would add another personal best with a time of 24.11 and third place finish in the 200m dash.
Freshman Briana McCall would play her part in the conference championship victory as well, taking second in the 800m run with a time of 2:13.96 eclipsing her previous personal-best of 2:16.17.
