Sabrina Starr will become the second woman and only the third Bearkat to compete in the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.
The Bearkat senior ranks No. 12 nationally in the NCAA women's 60-meter hurdles. She will compete in the 2014 indoor event March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M. Prelims in the women's 60 meter hurdles will be at approximately 7:45 p.m. (Huntsville time) Friday night.
“These are the elite of the elite in the United States,” head coach David Self said. “To qualify she's got to be one of the top 16 in her event. It speaks volumes about the direction of the program and for her as an athlete to have a great qualifying mark, not just squeaking in.”
The appearance will mark the first time an SHSU women's athlete has participated in the championships since 2009 when Dess Meek took home 11th in the high jump.
“Sabrina is all about business on the track,” Self said. “If you want to talk about someone who's a fierce competitor she's the definition of that.”
The LaPorte native is the current school record holder in the 60m hurdles with a mark of 8.19 and owns the top four times in the event in Sam Houston history – all of which she captured this season.
“She works hard and does all the things she needs to do,” Self said. “She's really grown up a whole lot over the last year and that reflects in her work ethic.”
ESPN3 will stream the meet live beginning at 6:55 p.m. on March 14 and at 6:50 on March 15. On Saturday, March 22, ESPNU will air a tape delay of the championships at 5:30 p.m.
“It has really capped off a great year,” Self said. “To win the Southland Conference Championships on the women's side and now have a qualifier for the National Indoor Championships is tremendously exciting.”
