Midweek woes continue in 7-6 loss

Sam Houston squandered an early 4-0 lead as they lost 7-6 at Texas-Arlington Tuesday night. The loss is the No. 16 Bearkats' third straight in a midweek game.

It appeared that the Kats were well on their way to a victory after a four-run second inning. Shortstop Dalton Perry drove in his first run of the season with an RBI single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt, center fielder Colt Atwood ripped a two-RBI single back up the middle. Catcher Anthony Azar drove in the fourth run with a single of his own.

The Bearkats ended up leaving the bases loaded in the inning when first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, who led off the inning, struck out to end the frame.

UTA answered right back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second. An error by O'Hearn allowed the first run to score and extend the inning, allowing another run to score on a single.

SHSU held on to its 4-2 lead until the Mavericks put up a four spot in the fourth inning. All four runs scored with two outs in the inning. A two-out walk was followed by a single and a hit batter. A double cleared the bases and gave UTA the lead for good.

The Kats added a single run each in the fifth and sixth innings. O'Hearn singled in third baseman Carter Burgess in the fifth and Burgess singled to score Azar in the sixth.

Sam Houston will head to Central Arkansas for a three-game series this weekend. The Bearkats are 3-0 in Southland play and the Bears are 1-2.
