The Sam Houston State men's and women's track & field programs worked double-duty over the weekend breaking four school records with action at the 87th Texas Relays in Austin and the Victor Lopez Classic in Houston.
The women's 1600 sprint medley relay squad of Elizabeth Ene, Sunday Foster, Lygia Foreman and Alyssa Dooley made history, breaking a school-record in the process of capturing a ninth place finish and time of 3:55.68 – one spot ahead of the host Longhorns.
Another school-record fell in the men's 1600 sprint medley relay courtesy of Kristen Mitchell, Jarrick Wright, Rodney Jones and De'Quad Binder's time of 3:20.64 in a fourth place finish out of 11 teams.
In the women's 1500 meter run, senior Alyssa Dooley inked her name in the SHSU record books with a personal-best with a time of 4:28.81 – almost two full seconds ahead of the mark she ran on the same track in 2012.
Adrienne Quillin became the fourth Bearkat to find the record books. In the hammer throw, the junior broke the school record with a toss of 183 ft. 3 inches – nearly six feet better than her mark one week ago at the Jim Mize Invitational.
In an encore performance, Quillin headed to Rice and broke own record in a first place finish with a distance of 186 ft. 6 inches.
Quillin's teammates Ashley Jenkins secured third at an even 167 ft. and Taryn Dyess placed tenth at 120 ft. 8 inches at Rice.
Senior Brek Christensen took part in the hammer throw in both cities recording a first-place finish and mark of 197 ft. 1 inch at the Victor Lopez Classic and a 12th place finish and distance of 195 ft. 9 inches at the Texas Relays.
In the men's 5000 meter run, junior Karl Schreiber secured a personal-best of 15:01.62 in a 12th place finish while senior Palo Ponce finished the race in 21st with a mark of 15:31.10.
Sophomore Danielle Demas and senior Sabrina Starr were amongst 80 competitors in the 100 meter hurdles in Austin. Demas recorded a collegiate-best of 13.82 in a 24th place finish while Starr took 29th at 13.88.
Bearkat senior Matthew Viverette and freshman Jay Roberson were amongst 47 of the nation's finest in the 110 meter hurdles with Viverette taking home 23rd and a time of 14.43 while Roberson placed 43rd at 15.50.
The Kats also saw success in the 1600 Meter Relays thanks to Ruth Amaku, Sunday Foster, Alexandia Kimble and Lygia Foreman's efforts in a 13th place finish and time of 3:43.06 amongst a 33-team field.
Amaku's big day would continue in the 400 meter hurdles as the sophomore placed 24th amongst 62 competitors with a time of 1:01.28. Fellow 1600 meter relay teammate Kimble secured 56th and a mark of 1:04.92.
The men's 400 meter relay squad of Justin Jenkins, Kristen Mitchell, Rodney Jones and Jarrick Wright also captured lucky number 13 with a time of 40.72 out of 36 teams.
In the second event of the day on Friday, senior Charles White took 11th in the long jump with a leap of 22 ft. 9.25 inches.
Other notables included the men's 1600 meter relay squad's time of 3:14.20 and 27th place finish; the women's 400 meter relay squad's time of 47.05 in 32nd place and the 100 meter dash duo of Jarrick Wright (10.70) and Kristen Mitchell (10.75) who took 40th and 47th respectively.
At the Victor Lopez Classic, the Sam Houston women placed second with a team total of 72.50 points while the men took third with 86 points – despite having several top athletes either competing only at the Texas Relays or splitting time at both meets.
In total, the Bearkats captured five first place finishes and a number of personal-bests.
Freshman Simon Imagbe secured his first top finish as a Bearkat with a personal-best and leap of 23 ft. 10.75 inches in the long jump; sophomore Joey Babbs captured first in the high jump tying his personal best of 6 ft. 6.75 inches and sophomore Elizabeth Lyssy grabbed gold in the javelin throw with a mark of 134 ft. 8 inches.
On the men's side, in addition to Christensen's first place feat, Ammaad McCarthy took home third (174 ft. 10 inches) and Kalvin Singletary finished tenth (127 ft. 2 inches). Singletary's best finish of the day came in the men's shot put where he captured third with a distance of 47 ft. 1 inch.
Nowhere was Sam Houston more active than in the women's shot put where seven Bearkats were amongst 29 competitors. Kristine Hanks led the way in second (46 ft. 8.75 inches) followed by Adrienne Quillin (11th place; 40 ft. 10.75 inches), Ashley Jenkins (12th place; 40 ft. 2 inches), Nicole Jenrette (17th place; 36 ft. 8.50 inches), Allyson Pettit (24th place; 33 ft. 1.25 inches), Paula Smith (25th place; 30 ft. 10.50 inches) and Frances Porter (26th place; 30 ft. 9.75 inches).
Six SHSU competitors captured top 20 spots in the discus throw including Brek Christensen's second place finish (154 ft. 2 inches), James Endsley in third (150 ft. 8 inches), Kalvin Singletary taking fifth (145 ft.), Jay Roberson in 16th (105 ft. 9 inches) and Jonathan Andrews in 17th (104 ft.)
Bearkat senior Torrance Williams would set a personal-best in a second place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.16.
Sophomore Nicole Aponte placed eighth in both the 800 meter run and the 1500 meter run. In the 800, Aponte picked up personal-best of 2:16.43, nearly two seconds better than her previous best. She would be followed by freshman teammate Briana McCall's time of 2:16.52 in ninth in the event.
Jay Roberson was one of several Bearkats to compete in both the Relays and Invitational. Along with Garrett Rose, the two took fourth and fifth place respectively as Roberson vaulted 15 ft. 3 inches and Rose 14 ft. 9 inches.
Junior Winnie Ileso had a big weekend of her own with two collegiate-bests including a time of 12.16 in a fifth place finish in the 100 meter dash and a leap of 18 ft. 9 inches in a fourth place long jump finish.
Freshman Evan Arambula was a first-time collegiate competitor in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase and didn't disappoint, placing fourth with a time of 9:42.70.
Sophomore sensations Joey Babbs took seventh and a personal-best of 16.32 followed by Jonathan Andrews' best of 17.93 in ninth place.
A trio of SHSU competitors made it a memorable day in the women's pole vault. Junior Kara Whitson (fourth place; 12 ft. 1.25 inches), junior Katelyn Wynn (sixth place; 11 ft. 9.75 inches) and sophomore Ashley Thompson (seventh place; 11 ft. 5.75 inches) all finished near the top of the leader board
In the women's 100 meter hurdles, while Starr and Demas were in Austin, Bearkat senior Allyson Pettit (seven place; 15 seconds) and sophomores Frances Porter (eighth place; 15.20; personal-best), Paula Smith (11th place; 15.59) and Nicole Jenrette (14th place; 15.83) took four spots in the top 15.
Jenrette's best finish of the day would occur in a fourth place finish the women's high jump and mark of 5 ft. 3 inches in the field of 22.
In the women's 5000 meter run, fellow freshmen Olivia Olguin and Ana Moreno saw their inaugural collegiate action in the event taking fifth (18:05.43) and sixth place (18:07.27) respectively to follow up successful indoor seasons for the first-year members.
In the same event of the men's side, junior Ryan Saam and sophomore Logan Terry both captured personal-bests in an 11th place finish (15:07.64) and 16th place finish (15:11.52) respectively.
The men would pick up two more top ten finishes including Trevor Kubera in seventh place (22.63) in the 200 meter dash followed by Dedrick Brooks (22.92) in tenth.
Other notables came in the 1500 Meter Run with Karl Schreiber (3:56.40) placing ninth and securing a personal-best on the men's side while Briana McCall captured 25th and a time of 5:06.07 for the women.
In the 800 meter run, Kennedy Howard would take 14th and a time of 1:59.83.
Following Ileso in the women's long jump, Kaylnne Wright (12th place; 17 ft. 6.75 inches), Khalaya Williams (15th place; 17 ft. 5.25 inches) and Frances Porter (24th place; 16 ft. 3.25 inches) rounded out the top 25.
The discus throw saw four Kats put up big numbers including Kristine Hanks (117 ft. 3 inches), Elizabeth Lyssy (113 ft. 5 inches), Ashley Jenkins (112 ft. 2 inches) and Adrienne Quillin (105 ft. 7 inches).
