The Sam Houston men and women play host to Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night in the next-to-last home Southland Conference double header of the 2014 basketball season.
The women start the evening with a 5:30 p.m. tip with the Lions. The men's game follows at 7:45 p.m.
The Bearkat men need victories in both Thursday's contest with Southeastern Louisiana and Saturday's afternoon game with New Orleans plus a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi loss in one of the Islanders' two games this weekend to earn the No. 2 seed at the Southland Tournament in Katy next week.
Sam Houston (19-9, 11-5) defeated Southeastern Louisiana 85-78 in Hammond, La., on January 16.The Lions (11-16, 6-10) come to Huntsville Thursday trying to nail down the eighth berth in the post-season tournament.
Jarabi Peters leads Sam Houston with 13.1 points per game. The 6-4 junior has been the Kats' top scorer in each of SHSU's last three games including a 26-point performance at Oral Roberts Saturday.
Kaheem Ransom also is averaging in double figures with an 11.5 scoring mean. Paul Baxter (9.3 ppg), James Thomas (8.3) and Michael Holyfield round out the Kats' starting lineup
JaMichael Hawkins (12.5 points per game) and Antonio Benton (12.1 ppg) lead the Lions in scoring.
Southeastern's magic number for securing a second-straight trip to the Southland Conference Tournament is two. Any combination of two Lion wins and/or Central Arkansas losses will clinch a spot for Southeastern.
The Sam Houston women will be looking to get back on the winning track Thursday. The Bearkats have dropped their last four games since defeating Northwestern State 57-53 at Johnson Coliseum Feb. 13.
Angela Beadle ranks second in the Southland in rebounds (10.1 per game) and sixth in scoring (15.4). Jasmine Johnson adds 11.1 points per game.
Sam Houston defeated Southeastern Louisiana 86-85 in overtime in the pair's first meeting in Hammond.
The women's game will be broadcast on KHVL-FM 104.9 while the men's game can be heard on KSAM 101.7 FM.
