K. C. KEELER POST-SPRING GAME INTERVIEW ON YOUTUBE
Sophomore quarterback Don King III completed 14 of 21 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns to highlight play by the Bearkat offense in the 2014 Sam Houston Orange-White spring football game Friday night.
The 80-play scrimmage marked the end to Sam Houston's four-week long spring drills and new Sam Houston head coach K. C. Keeler was pleased with the results.
“We've seen real progress during the last four weeks,” Keeler said. “I saw us starting to get some continuity offensively and we're really happy with how the kids are buying into what we're trying to do.
King was responsible for the offense's first two touchdowns, throwing to De'Chaar Greer for a 30-yard score and to Ricky Smith for a 48-yard tally.
Steven Hicks scored on a two-yard run and Samuell Kelley added a 29-yard touchdown to highlight the running game. Red-shirt freshman John Rodrigue ran 60 yards for the scrimmage's final touchdown.
Kelley carried seven times for 83 yards. Rodrigue rushed six times for 80 yards and completed nine of 12 passes for 89 yards.
The defense forced two turnovers including an interception by Denzel Barrett.
In the offense (White team) versus defense (Orange team) contest with a special scoring system, the White won 84-70.
“It's been really tough to get a really good idea what we're going to be like with so many people out with injuries,” Keeler said. “We're still a long way from where we need to be. I look forward to this August when we start training camp. Right now, we're a shadow of what we're going to be in training camp.”
