Sam Houston split a doubleheader with Abilene Christian Friday afternoon. The Bearkats won 7-1 in the first game. The Wildcats took the nightcap 4-2.
Sam Houston totaled their seven runs in the first game on seven runs including two homers.
Catcher Tiffany Castillo led off the second inning reaching on an error. She moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice then scored on a perfect bunt by center fielder Jessica Slater.
ACU got the run back immediately as first baseman Kyla Simmons blasted her second home run of the season over the left field fence.
A lead-off solo homer by shortstop Tayler Gray and a three-run home run by Tiffany Castillo ignited a six-run third inning as Sam Houston jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The home runs were Castillo's ninth and Gray's eighth of the year.
Left fielder Amy Pelson and pinch runner Jennie Kieval also scored for the Kats after a pair of ACU errors in the inning.
Shelby Lancaster (8-6) picked up the victory in the circle, facing 17 batters in the first five innings. Tayler Atkinson blanked the Wildcasts in the final two innings.
Designated player Hillary Adams put the Kats on the board first in the nightcap. Adams delivered an RBI single to right field to score Tiffany Castillo who singled. Adams' RBI was the 106th of her career, putting her one RBI away from tying with Kim Damian (2010-13) for second in SHSU all-time runs batted in. Joanne Graham holds the record with 112 in her career from 1985-88.
Wildcat center fielder Madison Buckley's two-run single in the top of the second inning put ACU in front. Sam Houston responded with a run on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Slater that scored third baseman Tori Koerselman who walked to start the bottom of the second inning.
Buckley added a two-run double in the top of the seventh for the game winning hit.
Sam Houston and Abilene Christian will met in the third and final game of the series Saturday at 12 noon.
